About the WNCMMA

Founded in 1992, the Western North Carolina Medical Managers Association is a not-for-profit coalition of practice administrators, vendors and friends of the health care industry. The organization has more than 200 members in the region. Our mission is to provide relevant education, inspiration and opportunity to health care administrators. Members are challenged to lead with skill, integrity and passion in our ever-changing business environment. We pursue these goals at our bi-monthly membership meetings, educational seminars and peer-to-peer networking and social engagements. The WNCMMA welcomes you to join us we strive for professional excellence in health care administration.

President: Terry McLane, MBA, CEO, The Family Health Centers

Terry McLane

Terry McLane has held the position of President of the WNCMMA since 2014 and Vice-President from 2011-2013.

Having been actively involved in healthcare leadership for more than 30 years, Mr. McLane has directed independent medical practices, as well as subsidiaries of hospital systems, predominantly in Ohio, West Virginia and North Carolina.  He has led The Family Health Centers, PA, an independent multi-facility group family practice in Asheville, as Chief Executive Officer since 2007.  He has also served as the Executive Director of the WNC Independent Practice Association since 2013.  He held board positions on the Mountain Advisory Board and NCMS Employee Benefits Advisory Council at Medical Mutual Insurance Company over the last 15 years.

Mr. McLane earned his Master of Business Administration degree at Wheeling Jesuit College in Wheeling, WV and a Master of Fine Arts in Piano Performance from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He also studied with renowned concert artist, Jorge Bolet in master classes at Indiana University and privately in New York City.

Mr. McLane and his wife, Kathy, enjoy classical music, fine arts and travel.  They reside in Asheville with their treasured Yorkshire terrier, Tosca.

Membership Director: Sarah Durham, Administrator & Clinical Manager, WNC Ear, Nose, Throat & Neck Surgeons

Sarah Durham is an Administrator and the Clinical Manager at WNC Ear, Nose, Throat, Head, and Neck Surgeons.  She acquired a BSBA degree, with a concentration in Marketing, from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.

She has a background in a variety of clinical roles and management, as well as in medical sales.  She enjoys giving her time to those in need and has volunteered with Hospice, as well as Community Care Clinics, which provide healthcare to the under and uninsured.

Sarah has a passion for the outdoors and enjoys hiking, camping, kayaking, fishing, as well as green initiatives that benefit her community.  Her home is open to rescue animals, and the man of the house is currently Buddy, the fluffy lovable feline. To this day Sarah holds the reigning title of being undefeated at the game of Twister.

 

Treasurer: Barbara Chambers, MBA, Director of Operations, Mercy Urgent Care

A member of WNCMMA for two years and Treasurer since November 2018, Barbara Chambers is the Director of Operations for Mercy Urgent Care. Barb holds an undergraduate degree in Communication and Psychology from Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania. Barb grew up in Ambridge, PA, a small steel town just outside of Pittsburgh. In 2016 she earned her MBA with a specialty in Healthcare from Liberty University in Lynchburg Virginia.

Barb has served at Mercy Urgent Care for 12 years, starting at the front desk and working her way through billing, practice management and her current role in Operations. Along with her leadership responsibilities at Mercy Urgent Care, Barb enjoys outdoor activities with her family and two German Shepherds.

Vice President: Rachel Sossoman, President and CEO, Mercy Urgent Care

Rachel Sossoman

Rachel Sossoman is the President and CEO of Mercy Urgent Care, the market leader for urgent care in Western North Carolina. In addition to her responsibilities at Mercy, Rachel enjoys serving as an ambassador for the urgent care industry. She has been published in the Journal of Urgent Care Medicine and has represented Mercy Urgent Care as a conference presenter on topics such as 21st century leadership, urgent care key performance indicators, and organizational culture.

Rachel earned her Master of Science in Human Resources from Western Carolina University, where she currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the Master of Science in Human Resources program, and is a current candidate for the Master of Business Administration at North Carolina State University.

In addition to her leadership responsibilities at Mercy Urgent Care and Western Carolina University, Rachel is proud to serve as Vice President of the Western North Carolina Medical Managers Association.

Prior to her experience in urgent care, Rachel taught for nine years in NC public schools, and was a 2001 recipient of the prestigious North Carolina Teaching Fellows Award. Whether through education or organization leadership, Rachel’s passion has remained the same: unleashing potential.

Secretary: Pam Lewis, CMM, HITCM-PP, The Family Health Centers, PA

Pam Lewis

Pam Lewis is the Business Office Manager at The Family Health Centers, P.A.  Her duties there include accounts payable, payroll processing, and managing the billing department.  Pam has been a healthcare manager for 40 years.  She has worked almost every job in a medical office and even started out scrubbing in Ophthalmic surgery.  She holds two national certifications with the Professional Association of Healthcare Office Management.  She served on the National Advisory Board for PAHCOM from 2008-2013 and was the Chairman of the Board from 2011 to 2013.  She started the only chapter of PAHCOM in North Carolina and serves as its President.  Pam feels knowledge is a valuable, intangible asset that each of us owns and should be willing to share for growth in the family, organization, community, and the world.

When not working at The Family Health Centers, she lives on a creek in Black Mountain with her husband, Don,  and 2 dogs –also the occasional bear, deer, ducks, raccoon, and heron!
